Really? I didn't see it that way at all. As I saw it, Toby and Elliot's relationship had to be ruined because it's Oz, and nothing good survives. A happy romance of any kind would diminish the street cred of the show. That's why Murphy and McManus knew to hide their love affair from the show writers. :-)
That Toby stood by Chris, knowing he was a serial killer, just made their love story bigger, more epic. Of course, Elliot wouldn't agree.
