In the midst of Vern's abuse and O'Reilly's temptations, Toby was able to put it all aside to work on the case. "No heroin today, thanks, I'm busy." If Sister Pete was as good a psychologist as they say she is, she would have wasted less time on preaching and guilting, and made sure Toby had meaningful things to do.
(I like to wonder how McManus's education program would have gone if he'd asked Toby to teach. Toby seemed an obvious choice, and he would have cared.)
